I just started with this piece right now and got confused by the position of the first 2 notes, b flat and c, with 2 and 4 fingering. Should I play it on the D string, and then shift to 1st position on the same D string for the 3rd note F?
Yes exactly, 4th position for the Bb and C, then down to first position for just the 2nd finger F, and lastly 3rd position first finger G. It is not a particularly efficient or elegant fingering choice, but since it is a method book I always suggest learning the marked fingerings regardless, because they are geared towards learning a specific skill. However, in "real life" you would probably see this fingering suggestion (as all fingerings are) and decide to do something different, like 2 4 for Bb and C, down to 2nd position 1 3 for F and G.

Ça fait environ 1an¾ que je n'avais pas joué ce morceau et je suis en train de le réapprendre maintenant pour le plaisir et je le jouais beaucoup plus vite que dans le morceau 😭😭
Je l'ai enregistrée extra lent pour aider a l'apprendre avec le video - mais je le jouerai aussi plus vite normalement. Mais pas trop, pour garder la melancholie ;)

Hey! You can let your left hand fingers rest on the string which effectively mutes them. There is a more detailed description of the technique in the book this is from, Contemporary Cello Etudes from Mike Block, and directly from the composer Eugene Friesen, either from taking a course or a private lesson with him, or from watching other videos he has made. Hope that helps!
